  1. Notes from Café 2 (Susanne)
Settings: Urbanity, mood, changes related to character.
Evidence which tells us that the scene of the short story takes place in London:
    P. 4, l. 90-91: a lot of street names in London. Heart of the city.
    P. 2, l.6-9 & P. 2, l. 52-53: A lot of shops.

How is the characters mood and how does it continually change during the short story?
    P. 2, L.1-13: The character, Ellie, has a very serious hangover, drugs combined with booze. She is really stressed out by the fact that she has an essay to hand over the next day. Her condition the day after the party is described:
    - Swollen cheek
    - Gummy eye
    - Chest hurts
    - Yellow eyefrost

    P. 2, L. 17- 18: Her memory about what went on the night at the party is a little insecure.
During the story she changes as if there are two different sides of Ellie, a grade of split personality.
The first Ellie does not give at shit about anything, she just wants to party, uses drugs (coke and K1)
K1: a drug that gives hallucinations.
P.2, L.20, which she seem addicted to, she needs to have more. Also she is not very serious about anything.
The other Ellie is the responsible part, who knows the importance of writing that essay. Unfortunately the responsible part of her is not the one in control. The irresponsible part is the strongest.

  2. • City = noise
    ○ Fast
    § Artificial / lights
    • She is insecure
    ○ Feels lonely among thousands of people
    • Needs to get some love from her family and friends
    • Her mother = Happiness
    • Near death experience
    ○ Now has something to be afraid of
    ○ Puts things into perspective
§ Unable to cope with reality
§ Sees the dangers of the way she is living
    • River = feeling better

    Mood:
    • Dark, hangover
    ○ Line 1
    • Tired, fells like crap, finds some coke
    ○ Change = When she leaves the house
    • Fresh air = positive mind-set
    ○ Changes to a cold that hurts her ragged lunges, and the light is bright…
    • A lot of dark objects
    ○ The glove = the middle finger
    • Very unsentimental about her description of the city
    ○ Used to roam the streets
    • Pill exhibition = wake up call to change her life
    ○ Questioning her own way of life
    ○ Exhibition & headache
    • River = wash her clean
    • Ellie goes from desperation to determination and back

    The role of the mother?

    Language:
    • Stream of c. = different perspective than e.g. 1. person narrator
    ○ No censorship
    ○ Reveals everything
    • Omniscient narrator = Ellie´s point of view
    • Short sentences = drug influence = lack of focus
    ○ Fragments = fragmentation of Ellie
    Structure:
    • Lack of structure = so does the main character
    • Clustered
    • Profanities = everything is included
    • A change of language in the end.
    ○ Change in her mind set

    Urban Setting_
    • Street names
    • Stressed out
    • Two Ellies´

Using the stream of consciousness writing technique gives us a different perspective of the main character than it would have if the story was written in a first person view. If it was written from Ellie’s point of view she could choose what to tell us, and what to hold back. The third person narrator is omniscient and tells us everything that Ellie is thinking and feeling. Therefore revealing everything about her.
The story lacks structure, and it is very clustered. All of her impressions are included like when she thinks “fuck”. Ellie is unstructured just like the text.
