    a) “Prisons are built with stones of law, brothels with bricks of religion”
Religion is Evil: Laws are active and therefore good, as people actually respects them, while religion is passive and everybody seems to think the laws of religion applies to everyone else than themselves.
Blake himself said that religion, politics and industrialism were “dark satanic mills”.
    b) “Active evil is better than passive good”.
It is better to be a bully and therefor actively evil than being someone watching and by that being passively good.
    c) “The two contrary states of the human soul (“songs of innocence” and “songs of experience”).
In “Songs of innocence” it is the pure soul, uncorrupted by the world, as the Children would see the world. The language is much simpler than in “Songs of Experience” as this is much more corrupted and perhaps realistic, as it is how the Adults would see the world (Like Chanett). The language reflects his opinion of the industrialism, seeing as Adults represent the industrial world while children represent a much purer world, Nature.

  2. William Blake was a poet and philosopher during the Romantic Movement; he had a massive impact on it. The Romantic Movement was a reaction to the increased rationalist, scientific viewpoint. It had great emotion above everything else, in all forms, but love, horror, terror.
    a)
It means people need to express their less rational and more emotional sides in order to escape the repressive nature of their morality and religion which binds them.
    b)
This means, if there are no contrasts in society and everyone is there same, there is no one to stand out and changes the norms in society. This is progression, and development.
    c)
Religion, politics and industrialism are a never ending cycle, which is corrupted and twisted to form itself around the wishes of the people behind, which is fact gives them power. The wings of the mills rotate, which represent each one of the three, Religion, politics and industrialism.

    1. Actually, people did not care for Blake's poetry at the time. But he has come to represent a part of the Romantic Movement.

  3. Tracy & Dennis:

“The tigers of wrath are wiser than the horses of instruction.”
William Blake - Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789/1794)
William Blake had no education and it is expressed in this quote that he believed that you cannot learn everything you need to know about life from reading books. Thereby justifying how he is still well-read even though he has no education. Some things in life you learn from listening to yourself and how you feel. The importance of emotions comes across in the quote - the tiger is the pure essence of emotions and being alive and the horse symbolizes rationalism and not living life to its fullest.
